Let’s look at what the Bible says about this. In Romans, it says the existence of God is evident from his creation. “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” Romans 1:20
So inquiring minds can look at the intricacy of God’s creation and deduce that someone carefully crafted our world, piecing together the plants, animals and man into a chain of life. It does not appear we are some cosmic accident.
But if this doesn’t convince you, there’s no worry. God is willing to prove himself. The examples are all over the Bible. Perhaps the most popular example involves the doubting Thomas of the New Testament. After Jesus arose from the dead, Thomas doubted the accounts of those that told him Jesus had resurrected. He said he would have to see the nail marks to believe. What did Jesus do? He showed him the nail marks and said: “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.” John 20:27
Jesus didn’t condemn Thomas for his doubts. And he doesn’t condemn us either. There are more examples in the Bible where God proved himself to his followers.
Another dramatic instance where God proved himself involved the prophet Elijah, who demonstrated he knew the real God by challenging the idol worshipers to prepare a sacrifice to their god. In 1 Kings Chapter 18, it describes how they laid out two sacrifices, one to an idol and one to Elijah’s God. And although Elijah ordered water poured all over the sacrifice, it burned as a mighty testimony that God accepted his sacrifice.
We can read about how Gideon asked for proof of God’s calling to help the Israelites in Judges 6.
God even used his faithful to prove himself to others. Sent to the lion’s den for his belief in God, Daniel faced certain death by the world’s standards. But God stayed the lions’ mouths. After a night alone with the lions, Daniel was alive the next morning when the king went to check on him. The king, who freed Daniel and punished Daniel’s enemies, realized Daniel’s God was able to save him.
Another prime example involves four teen-agers who were sent to a fiery furnace for praying to God against the pagan king’s law. They also appeared doomed, but incredibly the flames did not harm them. King Nebuchadnezzar realized their God was real and freed them.
Again and again, God proves himself. He frequently steps in when all other help is gone, demonstrating not only that he is real, but that he is mighty and able to help us — in the face of defeat.
From the Garden to Eden through the resurrection of Jesus Christ and beyond, the Bible is full of stories about God’s interaction with people. It is full of examples of how God proved himself real and faithful to his people.
From the practical standpoint, what does that mean to you? It means God is willing to prove himself to you like he proved himself to Thomas, the Israelites and … even me. When I’d exhausted my own resources, including all the doctors I could find, I prayed a prayer of complete surrender and God showed up. So just talk to God.
That’s what prayer is. Be honest about your feelings. But be willing to do things differently when he shows up. If you still want to be the boss, you’re not ready for God to act on your behalf.
